Do you need a series to make money as an author?
Series help. They're not required. Here's the data: Series readers are loyal readers. They buy book 2, then book 3. That loyalty builds predictable income. Standalone readers buy and move on. Both can be profitable. Series are just more efficient.
The Series Advantage
One reader buys book 1. If they love it, they immediately buy books 2 and 3. That's 3x revenue from one reader. Standalones don't have that leverage. You need three different readers for three books. Series convert once, earn three times.
Standalones Can Win Too
Standalone romance or mystery can sell well. The key? It needs to be exceptional. You can't rely on reader loyalty to book 2. Every book starts at zero readers. You need bestseller-level quality and marketing. It's possible. It's harder.
Decision: Build a series if you want predictable income scaling. Write standalones if you want creative variety. Both work. Series are just math.
