What is read-through and why should you care?
Read-through is the percentage of people who buy book 1 and then buy book 2. It's the most important metric for series authors.
How to Calculate Read-Through
Book 1 sales: 1,000 copies. Book 2 sales: 600 copies (from book 1 readers). Read-through: 600 / 1,000 = 60%. 60% is exceptional. Most authors get 20-40%.
Why High Read-Through Matters
High read-through = exponential revenue. Low read-through (20%) = each book starts from zero. High read-through (60%) = readers buy 2 and 3 automatically.
How to Improve Read-Through
End book 1 on a cliffhanger. Make readers desperate for book 2. Include a teaser for book 2 in book 1. Make the cover series consistent. Release book 2 fast (within 90 days). Momentum matters.
Track read-through on every release. It's the metric that shows you if your series strategy is working.
